Ben Gorham reinvented luxury perfumery in 2006. It sounds epic. It is. With BYREDO he set a milestone in the industry with his understanding of fragrances (free, exquisite, timeless). Bal d'Afrique was one of his first launches.
With this eau de parfum Gorham pays tribute to his father, who lived and worked in Africa for more than a decade. This is a compendium of the stories his father told about the continent, with a little imaginary twist.
Bal d'Afrique is easy, warm. It is citric, floral, and aromatic. It is a bit of everything, like everything BYREDO. This is a floral scent, very bright at first, sparkling and then turning to violet and jasmine. There is an unmistakable vetiver background. Victoria Beckham wears this, and she’s not one easily pleased.
Bal d'Afrique's perfumer is Jerome Epinette. With a friendly, contemporary scent, he seems to have captured something that was always there. This perfume is one of the brand's best-selling products, as well as a scent known around the world by perfume fans and BYREDO followers.
FAMILY: floral.
OLFACTORY NOTES:
- Top: bergamot, lemon, neroli, African calendula and buchu.
- Heart: violet, jasmine petals, and cyclamen.
- Base: black amber, musk, vetiver, and Moroccan cedarwood.
Gorham says that "Bal d'Afrique is an imaginary journey, as well as a complete celebration of how I see African culture and its influence." This fragrance is a twofold love letter: one to his father, one to Africa.
We like it for:
- It is emotional, full of references.
- Everything is exquisite: the glass, the name, the packaging.
- It smells BYREDO.
It contains 17% perfume extracts. All fragrances are made with raw materials extracted in the most respectful and least invasive way with the environment. The bottle cap is made of Bakelite. This Eau de Parfum is made in France and designed in Stockholm.
